  • me: hola
  • ray.: hello
  • me: Aaron says you need social media strategy info?
  • ray.: yeah. we are trying to make a affiliate site for my company.
  • we are pretty much all devs.
  • me: This is your man: http://www.convinceandconvert.com/ @jaybaer on twitter.
  • ray.: so i am trying to do a little marketing research
  • me: he lives in Flagstaff and does nothing but social media marketing... has a very informative site, a more informative newsletter, and is also very open to questions if you have a specific concern
  • ray.: cool. thanks
  • me: that's my best choice for general knowledge. If you want examples from a specific industry let me know
  • ray.: ok. ill check that out first.
  • me: cool
  • ray.: we are trying to prove that our marketing team sucks haha
  • me: where are you working again now?
  • ray.: ***** anti-virus company
  • so we got a graphic designer, web dev, 2 devs, and a data miner on this project.
  • me: On the project of setting up the affiliate program?
  • ray.: yeah. well we don't advertise over social media
  • so we are trying to prove to them that its better.
  • we run a lot of print ads...

  • me: Well, a good example of a startup that's using soc media to push a web-based service is page.ly They offer hosting and wordpress site packages at a flat monthly rate and have built their business through word-of-mouth and social media referrals. They recently added an affiliate program as well as a white-label reseller program that's been doing great
  • You have a tech-based service... techs don't read print pubs anymore
  • ray.: well we have a good following in the tech field.
  • we are trying to market to non-tech people
  • which is where we fall short.
  • me: Get a brand ambassador then... someone who already has a strong following in social networks, but with an audience that you have not yet tapped into... let them be your voice.
  • ray.: how do you get someone like that?
  • me: for example, iJustine's backing of mozy.com for online data storage /hard drive backups
  • start by looking at who you already communicate with... find out who has an engaged audience... people on your lists who are often quoted, retweeted, re-shared... whatever the tool is for the network you are on
  • that's a person of influence... then approach them and ask if they are interested in providing a review of your product

  • ray.: ok. that makes sense.
  • me: There's tools out there that help you find people in your networks with influence... http://twinfluence.com/ is one

  • me: http://klout.com/ is better though... doesn't require access to your account

  • ray.: cool. thanks. ill check all this stuff out and let you know if i have any other questions. thanks.
